As the cold weather sweeps across Victoria, it's crucial for pet owners to ensure their furry friends stay warm and comfortable. At Auraly, we believe in providing the best for your pets, which is why we're introducing our AurCave™ Pet Bed, designed to keep your pets snug and secure throughout the cold months.
Winter Pet Care: Keeping Pets Warm in Cold Weather
Dr. Liz Walker, CEO of RSPCA Victoria, emphasizes the importance of winter care for pets. "While some animals can live happily outdoors in colder weather, they still require extra care and consideration during the winter months. Some parts of Victoria regularly see sub-zero temperatures, posing significant welfare risks for animals. There are many things we can do to prepare and ensure our animals stay warm and protected from the winter elements."
Last winter, RSPCA Victoria received over 4,700 cruelty reports, with common issues being underweight animals, insufficient food and shelter, poor husbandry, and lack of veterinary treatment. It's crucial for pet owners to consider additional requirements during winter, such as extra bedding, more food, and adequate shelter away from the wind and rain.
Cold Weather Pet Care Tips
- Outdoor Pets – Ensure they have proper shelter and a place to sleep away from the elements.
- Indoor Pets – Make sure they have a warm place to sleep away from drafts and that heating units are safe to avoid burns.
- Vulnerable Pets – Young, elderly, outdoor pets, or those with health conditions like arthritis need extra care.
- Small Animals – Keep rabbits and guinea pigs indoors if possible, as their body temperatures can drop dangerously low in cold weather.
- Horses – Rug horses according to age, breed, type of exercise, and climate, but avoid leaving summer rugs on horses in wet weather.
- Farm Animals – They should be able to move from their paddocks into three-sided shelters to escape the cold, rain, and wind. Chickens need extra bedding to stay warm.
- Shelter – All animals need some type of shelter to protect them from winter elements. Provide three-sided shelters for horses and livestock and enclosed areas with warm bedding for others.
- Food – Animals may need more food during cold weather to regulate their body temperature. Consult a veterinarian on the right amount.
- Water – Ensure outdoor water bowls and troughs aren’t frozen and provide more than one water source where possible.
- Exercise – Pets still need exercise even in colder weather. For indoor pets, provide enrichment like games and food dispensing toys to keep them active.
